Chirk Castle

We visited Chirk Castle on our way home from spending the day in Llangollen – it is not far from Llangollen at all, roughly 15 minutes.

Chirk Castle is located in Chirk, not too far from Wrexham – so if you’re from the North West region, it isn’t too far from you. After my parents visited and said how beautiful it was, I immediately added it to my National Trust to-do list.

Free for us as NT members, if you want entry into the grounds it is £14 for adults and £7 for children. Steep, but if you pay that price you will without-a-doubt spend the entire day exploring the grounds. It’s beautiful and vast.

You can actually go inside the castle and see how stunningly decorated the rooms are – it reminded us of visiting the Vatican, when we were in search of the Sistine Chapel. Considering how old the castle is, the décor is remarkable, the family definitely had style. When you are walking around, there are staff in every room to ask questions and tell you stories – so I won’t explain any of the history here, because it is so interesting hearing it when you are within the rooms of the castle. But all I will say is that it is stunning and vast, and well looked after.

In the middle of the castle is a courtyard where you can take a seat and enjoy some food and drink from the café. We took this opportunity to perch on the grass in the center so Dexter could literally run around as we had been carrying him around the castle. He had us in stitches, and everyone who was sat having a bite was enjoying watching the pure joy on his face. We had such a laugh here.

Just walking around the outside of the castle, you can see how large the grounds are. We barely touched it. If you come here for a day out, definitely get your walking boots on, and explore every little bit of this area, lots of walking routes, and sheep!

I also recommend asking the staff about the family history of the castle, it’s intriguing.
